The Joy of Asking

A 30 to 45- minute keynote address or 90 minute workshop
by
Roger Richard Breault, MCS, CFRE, Speakers’ Bureau of Alberta and Fund Raising Consultants of the West.

Giving from the Heart means “taking from the heart”. One cannot happen without the other. As fundraisers and as dedicated volunteers, why do we expect to have an impact if we do not accept this premise?  The answer is: “we can’t.”  It’s fundamental.  And it’s the most compelling and attractive reason why there is an immense joy in asking.  What does this all mean?

Using personal anecdotes, a few funny true stories and a healthy dose of disparaging self-examination, the speaker will help everyone deepen their appreciation of the beauty of asking with both our hearts as well as our minds in everything we do –especially in charity work.

There is both a science and an art to giving and receiving.  When “an ask” is botched, both the giver and the asker can feel bad; but when it happens successfully, nothing can be more exhilarating for both.   When you examine the acts of giving and receiving, while they may seem contrary to one another, they are so congruous, so synonymous in their intent, that they are inseparable and almost indistinguishable.  Therein lies the secret of the joy of asking.  And it can be as exciting and as fulfilling as the joy of giving.

This keynote or workshop will help participants understand that very few things in life are more ennobling than asking others to give of their time and money to make the community a better place.  As humans, we are privileged to be in the position of being able to do it.  And what a joy it is!  The joy of asking is at the very heart of philanthropy.

Participants will learn that, with a new attitude and approach, they can view community work and fundraising as the productive, fun, ennobling, enriching, charming and enabling experience that it really is.  It will also help eliminate the jitters for first-time fundraisers and volunteers because it will serve to demystify the process by boiling it down its’ most basic elements.

This keynote will have practical tips too.  It will answer the two most important ingredients of how to succeed in fundraising and asking people to serve as volunteers:  “how to set up a request?”  and  “how to successfully make it?”

Mr. Roger Richard Breault, MCS, CFRE, Manager, Fund Raising Consultants of the West and the Speakers Bureau of Alberta will deliver the session.  Mr. Breault has more than twenty-five years of professional fundraising experience and non-profit management.
